UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller Merging Survival Horror with Among Us Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed a number of intriguing future games, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive game where a girl harboring multiple human souls within her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Within her reside four separate personas, all possessing their own fears and drives. These entities can take over spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Judging by showcased footage, much of the action unfolds within a creepy medical facility, though additional clips show the protagonist exploring a desolate church.
A World of Personal Dread
"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to other people can activate a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are unique to every individual."
The central gameplay loop involves managing whichever soul surfaces at any given moment. However, these souls will change against your will during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the girl one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Decision
At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with nurses all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the waiting room have large flowers growing from their heads should be. Flowers are a recurring element, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the souls claims that the body belongs to them," explains a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."
Once players have deduced a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, since every entity can deceive or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The last one remaining might be a fake. Either way, your choices are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
