UK, UN and EU Condemn a ‘Gross Injustice’ of Jimmy Lai’s Two-Decade Jail Sentence.

The judicial ruling of media publisher and British citizen Jimmy Lai to 20 years in prison in Hong Kong has elicited global rebuke. Rights groups and international powers have labeled the national security convictions driven by politics.

Global Condemnation and Demands for Freedom

UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper stated that the two-decade sentence constitutes a de facto life term for the elderly man. She described the trial as being driven by political motives under a law designed to silence Beijing's detractors. She urged Hong Kong's authorities to terminate his suffering and allow his return to his family.

“This verdict illustrates how the vague and overly broad provisions of Hong Kong’s national security legislation can be interpreted in contravention of universal rights standards,” said UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk.

A representative for the European Union, Anitta Hipper, remarked that Brussels “deeply regrets” the outcome of Lai’s prosecution and pushed for his swift liberation without preconditions.

Context of the Prosecution

Jimmy Lai, the founder of the now-shuttered activist publication, was taken into custody four years ago the imposition of a controversial national security law in Hong Kong. The law was enacted by Beijing after extended demonstrations backed by Lai's media outlet.

He was found guilty on counts of plotting to create inflammatory publications and conspiracy to collude with foreign forces. The second set of accusations were based on the controversial security law.

A Son’s Anguish

Lai’s son, Sebastien, shared that his father fears dying alone apart from his relatives. The legal team has called him the “globally most notable detainee” in custody today.

Sebastien Lai said that while the sentence was expected, its reality was harsher than imagined, yet it provided some “respite” that the court process had concluded.

Diplomatic Fallout

This ruling has complicated UK-China relations. British leader Keir Starmer reportedly raised Lai’s case in talks with China's leader Xi Jinping recently. Yet, any potential progress on obtaining his liberty is not known.

Sebastien Lai questioned the upside to improved bilateral relations announced recently, stating it felt “a bit tone deaf.”

Official Responses

In contrast, the governments in Hong Kong and Beijing applauded the court's decision. Hong Kong’s leader John Lee claimed the verdict showed that “justice is served.”

The mouthpiece of China’s foreign ministry, Lin Jian, labeled Lai the “chief architect” behind previous protests and asserted the trial had been “proper and within the law.” He called on foreign countries not to interfere in the nation's domestic matters.

A Defining Moment

Media freedom advocates labeled Lai as a symbol of diminishing media freedom in Hong Kong. Reporters Without Borders' director general said it was a “bleak moment for those who value a liberty of the press.”

Given an almost 100% rate of guilty verdicts on national security offences, Lai’s lengthy term is seen as the most severe yet handed down under the security statute.
