The US President Pressures Thailand to Reaffirm Commitment to Cambodian Ceasefire with Tariff Warnings
Washington has exerted influence on Thailand to reaffirm its dedication to a truce deal with Cambodia, warning that trade negotiations could be suspended as efforts are made to prevent a Trump-mediated ceasefire arrangement from falling apart.
Border Tensions Escalate
Earlier this week, Thai officials announced it was suspending the ceasefire deal, alleging Cambodian forces of laying fresh landmines along the mutual frontier, among them an incident that allegedly wounded a Thai soldier on duty, who lost a foot in the blast.
Following this, one person has been killed and several others wounded by exchanges of fire along the border between the two nations, raising concerns of a new round of retaliatory clashes.
American Economic Leverage
Over the weekend, a Thai foreign ministry spokesperson told journalists that a letter from the Office of the US Trade Representative announcing the suspension of trade deal talks was received on the previous evening.
The spokesperson referenced the document as stating that discussions on trade – which are focusing on a 19 percent American duty – could restart once Thailand reaffirmed its commitment to implementing the joint ceasefire declaration.
“Tariff negotiations will continue and remain separate from border issues,” stated a different official representative.
President’s Economic Warning
Speaking to the press aboard the presidential plane as he traveled to the Sunshine State on Friday, Trump implied that he had employed tariff warnings in discussions with the ASEAN nation heads.
The US president said, “Today, I prevented a conflict using tariffs, the menace of duties,” adding, “they’re doing great. I think they’re gonna be fine.”
Truce Deal Origins
The President witnessed the finalization of a ceasefire agreement, conducted in Malaysian territory this last autumn, and has touted it as one of several deals around the world he says should earn him the Nobel Peace prize.
The worst fighting in a ten years between military forces of both nations erupted in July, with exchanges of fire, shelling and aerial attacks leaving dozens of people killed and 300,000 displaced.
Longstanding Border Dispute
Thailand and Cambodia have a historic territorial disagreement that originates from disagreements over maps from the colonial period drawn up by the French. Historic shrines along the frontier are claimed by both sides.
