New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their latest talk.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he has been listed as critical but stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. And again, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”
NYPD shared security footage Monday of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims according to reports.
The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday in the area between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a newborn.
“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd hasn’t played during the current season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with a shoulder injury that required surgery.
Boyd came to New York as a free agent in March and was expected to be a key part of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a practice session on early August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has remained around the team all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
