Miami Heat and Portland Trail Blazers Secure Initial Wins Following Player Detentions
The Miami Heat scored 86 first-half scores against the Memphis Grizzlies
Miami Heat claimed a decisive 146-114 victory against the Grizzlies in their first NBA match after player Rozier was arrested over alleged unlawful sports betting.
Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups was also arrested as part of a broad FBI investigation into sports betting. Both men deny the claims.
However, the Heat were not distracted as they put up 86 opening half points to lead the Grizzlies by thirty-nine at halftime, the biggest halftime lead in the team's 37-year existence.
Adebayo top-scored with 24 points and later stated Rozier had the support of the team.
"We support him. Full support," Adebayo stated. "You support him through and through. That's our brother at the end of the day."
Heat coach Spoelstra commented: "Rozier is a person who is very dear to everyone. He's had a beneficial influence on our locker room.
"We send our thoughts and support for him as he goes through the situation."
The Trail Blazers additionally won their first game after the arrests, with Brazilian Splitter stepping in as temporary head coach in Chauncey's non-attendance and guiding the squad to a decisive 139 to 119 win against the Warriors.
"Everyone experienced positive times with Billups and his coaching style," Tiago remarked. "Our thoughts are with him and his loved ones but we have a job to do."
NBA Commissioner Silver 'Upset' by Recent Events
Addressing the detentions for the first time, league head Silver said he was "deeply disturbed" by the events of the recent days.
"There's nothing more important to the NBA and supporters than the fairness of the competition," he informed a broadcaster. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was disturbing."
Silver further said an NBA investigation into the player's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a game he played for the Charlotte Hornets against the New Orleans Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.
"We were informed by the authorities and the betting companies," he added.
"We then looked into that situation and were open regarding it. Although there was that aberrational betting, we, frankly, found no evidence.
"The federal government has subpoena power... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can take various actions that the NBA is unable to.
"Therefore, we've been cooperating from that point. Naturally, what they revealed recently was an charge.
"And 30 months after, he has not been found guilty of any offense, in justice to Terry.
"Obviously, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance in this case between upholding rights and investigating."
