The offspring of previous South African President Jacob Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terror-linked charges at the commencement of her legal proceedings in the coastal city of Durban.

The defendant, forty-three, is being prosecuted over statements she posted on online platforms in the past during deadly protests in South Africa that followed the detention of her dad.

A period of chaos in several parts of the country in the summer of 2021, including plundering and intentional burning, caused at least 300 individuals dead and caused damage worth an estimated $2.8 billion (£2.2 billion).

Zuma-Sambudla has been alleged of encouraging this unrest and faces accusations of provocation to commit terror-related activities and civil unrest.

Background of the Legal Matter

The unrest were centered in the provinces of Gauteng region and KZN and were triggered by the ex-leader's arrest for disobeying a court order to testify at an investigation into accusations of graft while he was in power.

The defendant has consistently denied the accusations against her, with her attorney previously describing the state's evidence as weak.

She has also repeatedly said the allegations against her were an effort to settle political grievances with her father after he founded his own political party and ran against the ANC.

Support and Case Arguments

This was echoed by the Zuma foundation, which stated the legal matter was an "abuse of power" and a "organized effort" of "politically motivated and familial persecution" against the previous head of state and his family.

A handful of followers from her party, the political party, appeared outside the judicial building, while her father and other group representatives participated in the court sessions inside.

The defense has argued that the proof presented by prosecutors is insufficient and fails to provide substantial proof for a conviction.

Main Aspects of the Case

  • Social media statements from the past form the core of the state's case
  • Violent unrest in July 2021 resulted in significant fatalities and economic destruction
  • The individual on trial is charged with multiple charges of encouragement to unrest
  • Legal proceedings are expected to carry on for several weeks

The legal proceedings continues as the prosecution and defense present their arguments before the judicial authority in what is projected to be a carefully observed court case with significant political ramifications for South Africa.
