A Heap of Japanese Animation News Arrived Over the Festive Season
The winter break present a plethora of pursuits far superior than catching up on the updates: discovering surprises, indulging in festive fare, and harnessing patience techniques to avoid yelling at loved ones. I hope you managed to accomplish all these things and more. However, the entertainment world doesn't go on vacation, and this is notably true for the realm of anime. Many thrilling developments emerged during the holidays, and if you missed any, here is a compilation of the most exciting bits.
One-Punch Man Its Third Season Is Moving Forward (Come 2027)
Perhaps the most shocking revelation, the notorious troubled production that was the third season of One-Punch Man proved insufficient to stop the series' continuation. Season 3 will be back with a follow-up batch of episodes in 2027—such a distant date they easily could have labeled it season 4. Adding to the surprise, the studio J.C. Staff will continue to be in charge. Thankfully this time, director Shinpei Nagai is set to direct from the start, which could be taken as a positive development. But, the key visual for the new episodes is a mirror of the one used for season 3, just with protagonists Saitama and Garou facing different directions. This leads one to believe that, at this point, they must be teasing the fans.
Ruri Dragon Will Be the Premiere Shonen Jump Anime Produced By Kyoto Animation
Kyoto Animation has built a standing for being an top-tier animation studio, distinguishing itself not just for the superb artistry of its work but for the ethical practices of its employees—a sadly unusual standard in the industry. Curiously, until now, it had not adapted an anime stemming from a manga serialized in Shonen Jump, arguably the most famous magazine in the industry. Ruri Dragon will break that tradition, and what a superb choice it is. The manga by Masaoki Shindo achieved massive popularity when it launched in 2022 after just a small number of issues, but then went into a extended pause due to the creator's health issues. When it returned with a reduced workload, the series proved it hadn't lost the fans' support and positive sentiment, and now everyone is thrilled about the upcoming KyoAni adaptation.
The Kingdom Series Season 6 Will Get a Sequel Now in the Works
Kingdom is the top-selling, decades-spanning Shueisha manga that is other than One Piece. If you've haven't come across it before, it's because it only recently got an English release, but the anime has been going on for a while, and its sixth season was a further outstanding entry. Apparently that was just the first half, because a "sequel" has been confirmed as in production, and it will almost certainly debut in 2026.
Science Saru Is Adapting A Witch in Mongolia To Anime
Another studio known for the superior craftsmanship of its work, Science Saru has brought us hit shows of the ilk of Space Dandy, Devilman Crybaby, and, more recently, Dandadan. This time, the studio will be taking on the adaptation of Tomato Soup's manga A Witch's Life in Mongol, which is based on the true story of Fatima, an influential woman and intellectual in the Mongol Empire in the 13th century. Based on the trailer, the anime titled Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia will have a distinctly fresh and intriguing visual style, which is somewhat reminiscent of Ranking of Kings. Scheduled to launch in July 2026, this one will definitely be on my list of anticipated shows.
The Tougen Anki Series Is Set to Continue With a Second Season
Immediately following the release of its twenty-fourth episode, it was announced that Tougen Anki will be receiving a second season. Adapted from the Japanese legend of Momotaro, Tougen Anki is based on the manga by Yura Urushibara. The second season of the anime will delve into the Nikko Kegon Falls Arc, but a firm premiere date has yet to be revealed.
