A Devastating Transformation a Single Year Has Made in the US

One year ago, the landscape was entirely distinct. Ahead of the US presidential election, thoughtful citizens could admit the nation's significant faults – its inequities and inequality – but they could still perceive it as the US. A free society. A country where constitutional order meant something. A country guided by a honorable and decent public servant, despite his elderly years and growing weakness.

Currently, this autumn, countless Americans barely recognize the country we inhabit. Persons alleged as unauthorized foreigners are collected and pushed into transport, at times refused legal rights. The East Wing of the presidential residence – is being destroyed to build a lavish event space. The president is targeting his political rivals or alleged foes and requesting the justice department hand over a massive sum of taxpayer money. Uniformed troops are dispatched across metropolitan centers under fabricated reasons. The military command, rebranded the Defense Ministry, has practically rid itself of routine media oversight as it spends possibly reaching nearly $1tn from citizen taxes. Universities, law firms, media outlets are submitting under the president’s threats, and billionaires are handled as members of the royal family.

“The US, shortly prior to its quarter-millennium anniversary as the globe's top democratic nation, has tipped over the edge into autocracy and fascism,” Garrett Graff, commented this past summer. “Finally, faster than I thought feasible, it transpired in this country.”

Every morning starts with fresh terrors. It is hard to comprehend – and painful to realize – how severely declined our nation is, and the speed at which it unfolded.

Nevertheless, we know that the leader was properly voted in. Following his highly troubling first term and even after the alerts linked to the understanding of Project 2025 – following Trump himself stated openly he planned to act as an autocrat only on the first day – enough Americans elected him over his Democratic opponent.

Frightening as the current reality is, it's more daunting to understand that we have only been several months into this administration. Where will three more years of this deterioration find us? And suppose that period transforms into an prolonged era, since there is nobody to restrain this leader from determining that a third term is required, possibly for security concerns?

Certainly, all is not lost. There will be legislative votes next year that could establish an alternate balance of power, if Democrats recapture either chamber of parliament. There are elected officials who are trying to impose some accountability, like Democratic congressmen that are launching an investigation into the attempted fund seizure from legal authorities.

And a national vote in 2028 could begin the path to healing exactly as the prior selection put us on this unfortunate course.

We see millions of Americans demonstrating in public spaces of their cities, similar to recent recently at democracy demonstrations.

Robert Reich, commented this week that “the dormant powerhouse of the nation is awakening”, just as it did following the Red Scare during the fifties or throughout the sixties activism or in the Watergate scandal.

During those times, the tilting vessel ultimately corrected itself.

The author states he recognizes the signals of that resurgence and observes it occurring currently. As evidence, he cites the widespread marches, the widespread, bipartisan pushback to a personality's dismissal and the largely united defiance by media to sign military mandates they report only what is sanctioned.

“The slumbering entity always remains dormant before specific greed turns extremely harmful, an specific act so contemptuous of societal benefit, certain violence so noisy, that it has no choice other than to stir.”

It's a positive outlook, and I value the author's seasoned opinion. Maybe he’ll prove to be right.

At the same time, the crucial issues remain: will the nation return to normalcy? Can it reclaim its position in the world and its commitment to constitutional order?

Or do we need to admit that the 250-year-old experiment succeeded temporarily, and then – swiftly, totally – ended?

My pessimistic brain indicates that the latter is accurate; that everything might be finished. My hopeful heart, nevertheless, tells me that we must try, in whatever ways we can.

Personally, as a media critic, that means urging journalists to adhere, more thoroughly, to their duty of scrutinizing authority. For different individuals, it may be working on congressional campaigns, or coordinating protests, or discovering methods to defend electoral access.

Less than a year ago, we were in an alternate reality. A year from now? Or three years from now? The truth is, we cannot predict. Our sole course is to strive to persevere.
